(Matador) Sprained Ankle, Julien Baker's initially self-released 2015 debut, gained critical acclaim for its painstaking, delicate and melancholy depiction of her mental health. When the Memphis singer-songwriter came out to her parents aged 17, her father scoured the Bible for chapters on acceptance. These highly personal songs again explore her sexuality, Christianity, self-doubt and isolation. This first effort for a larger label has a hymnal atmosphere, in which the turbulence shows in her words. The harder I swim, the faster I sink, she sings in the spellbinding Sour Breath, while Shadowboxing finds her rueing, You're everything I want and I'm all that you dread. Her vocals are as pure as crystal, although the Snow Patrol-like pattern of hushed verse/epic chorus can sound formulaic. Her guitar and piano now come with string arrangements and a big, satin-finish production, which takes baby steps towards a mainstream audience, although perhaps some of her magical fragility is being lost. The Union Chapel, Islington, was the setting for Organ reframed; a celebration of music played on an organ recently restored, having been originally designed and built specifically for the acoustics in the Chapel by 'master' organ builder Henry Willis in 1877 with three keyboards, 39 nobs and over 2000 pipes I have it on good authority that it's one of the finest examples of its kind in the world.
Billy Corgan can be a bit of a troll. He himself admitted as much during a recent interview with the Howard Stern Show, explaining that his decision to now go by William Patrick Corgan was done solely to irritate people. Thus, it would be reasonable to assume that Corgan's recent live cover ofMiley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball was also done ironically. But, that's not actually the case. The Smashing Pumpkins is a self-admitted fan of Cyrus, having previously called her a very good singer and a better pop star than 99.99% of them. They've even explored the possibility of collaborating together. So, when he unfurled the Bangerz cut to open Friday night's encore in Toronto, it wasn't meant as a joke. Rather, Corgan delivered the solo acoustic performance with the same earnestness and passion as he does playing his own material. Hear for yourself up above (via Alternative Nation). Update: Corgan again covered the song for Jimmy Fallon's Cover Room video series. WPC is currently touring in support of his new solo album, Ogilala. Oakland/Chicago rock singer-songwriter Ezra Furman has released "Love You So Bad," ascrappy, retro-glam first singlefrom his upcoming albumTransangelic Exodus.According to Furman, it's "not a concept album,"which can only mean one thing. Here's how Furman explained it in a statement:
"The narrative thread is I'm in love with an angel, and a government is after Beck is set to drop his latest album,Colors, this Friday, October 13th. He's shared a number of singles ahead of the hotly anticipated release, and he performed the latest one on Tuesday night's episode ofJools Holland. (Read: Beck in 10 Songs) Back by his six-piece band and some sharp-angled pillars, Beck delivered Up All Night while shimmying about the stage in typical Beck-ian fashion. He also dusted off fan-favorite Devil's Haircut for a heavy, shredding rendition. Check out the replay of both performances below. Last night's Jools Holland also featured Beck. From the singles alone, it's pretty clear this new effort is quite a shift from 2014's Grammy-winningMorning Phase.
